About the Cancer Centre

At a cost of $14.8 million, the new cancer centre provides an environment that has one purpose in mind - to help patients and their families throughout their journey with cancer.

The aim of the centre is to house all outpatient cancer consultations and treatments services, our clinical research teams and the many cancer services departments in the one area of the hospital.
These include the Cancer Coordination Unit, Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Haematology, the Psychosocial Oncology Unit, Clinical Palliative Care, the Centre for Palliative Care and the Cancer Clinical Trials Unit.

  • Every day, 115 people are treated for cancer at St. Vincent's.
  • Every week, teams of health professionals gather to discuss individual patients.

Through the development of our new Cancer Centre, staff will be better able to share their knowledge and experience. They will be able to look at images and pathology; and hear how the patient is affected.

Together, they will plot the way forward ... and every patient will be offered tailored medical, surgical and psychological care.

Artist's impression of the new cancer centre

A central garden atrium incorporating lounge seating and a water feature within the treatment area offers focus and harmony during a time of possible high stress and illness.

The Cancer Clinical Care Centre has everything a patient with cancer needs - in the one place, on the one day, at the one time. The atmosphere in the patient areas conveys a sense of well-being through the use of natural elements such as light, space, wood, water, stone and low noise. These environmental features complement the world-class care we provide.

On walking into the Cancer Centre, you will immediately recognise the patient centred focus that has guided this service for over 30 years. Patients, family members and staff will experience a sense of security, confidence and calm to counter the physical and mental burden that cancer care can often generate.

The Centre offers:

Open Plan Treatment Space
A treatment area with capacity to care for 28 patients in specialist treatment areas according to individual patient needs.

Reflection Rooms
Private reflection rooms for patients, families, and carers, and patient and staff education facilities.

A Diagnostic and Care Planning Theatre
A specially designed 'hi-tech' auditorium where cancer care teams will meet to diagnose, plan and review the progress and care of every cancer patient. The theatre will have all care data in electronic format and online access to medical collaborators wordwide for their specialist input.

We aim to create an innovative, yet practical new patient treatment centre, an environment offering privacy or company.

Our dream is for a one-stop cancer care centre offering a wide range of services to assist patients and their families to manage their cancer journeys – encouraged and inspired by St. Vincent's extraordinary level of care.
